Character: Alice Margatroid
Age: Who knows, let's go 70+, looks to be around 18-20.
Canon: Touhou Project
Canon Point: Post Hopeless Masquerade
Background: It all starts in the PC-98 days, in the last game on that system, Alice shows up in Makai, the world of devils, demons and such. Unfortunately details of why she's there and her relations with others of that realm are never elaborated on, and attempting to do so here would count as head canon. There is also some debate that the two aren't the same person, but when you have two characters with the same name, style, magic taste, music and dialogue referencing things that happened before, it's really a dumb debate. The magic being dolls. That magic is a constant for Alice, even back then, although she did use normal style magic when she showed up a second time, as the bonus boss of the game.
After that comes the games released on windows, where the real meat is. Alice lives in the Forest of Magic in Gensokyo and is pretty much neighbor to Marisa Kirisame. Her profile states she used to be a human, but became a Magician type Youkai through magics. Youkai being typically a catch all Japanese term for monsters, from traditional like the Karakasa to vampires and are seen by many to bee human eating monsters. She doesn't really do so, and is noted as actually being safe to be around for normal people. She typically keeps to herself, though does travel out of her home at times to do various things, only involving herself in Incidents when they involve her in some form. Or when someone is digging for a fight against her, but that's not entirely getting involved.
As for what usually occupies Alice, it mostly all involves dolls of some sort. Making them, collecting them, controlling them with magic to perform house hold chores, using magic to have a conversation with them, performing shows in the village where all the humans live with said dolls. Some would say she herself even looks like a doll, in that she is slightly pale like one. But yes, for the most part, her life revolves around dolls. All to make one that can live and thank on it's own. Basically she wishes to play God and make Pinocchio by hand. Her progress is difficult to measure. Aside from all that, she doesn't show up often in the games, and only makes short appearances in other related material. But she's been in enough Incidents at this point to count as a second-rate main character by now, perhaps.
Incidents are basically events that upset the status quo of Gensokyo, and are usually handled by humans who fly off to handle things. This process involves going somewhere and beating up everyone that shows up. The first Incident in Gensokyo Alice is in, is Perfect Cherry Blossom, where the main character of choice kicks her door down, beats her up and is told by Alice "Hey dumbass, if you came here because of all those blossoms, you went backwards, check the wind." So in the end, she didn't have much to do with anything, other than being introduced and having a functional brain. The following incident however, Immaterial and Missing Power, involves people being drawn towards constant parties, is an odd combination of both. In her own story, she sets out to solve why there are so many nightly parties and a strange mist around. In other stories for the most part, she is either blamed partially for things being weird (she isn't), or a fight goes down due to annoyance.
The next one Alice is involved in, Imperishable Night, is actually one she willing threw herself into. The moon that hung in the sky was, somehow, replaced with a fake. To youkai, the moon has various nice things going for it, so it being replaced like that wasn't too great. Now, humans aren't likely to have noticed, or care, so she ends up having to bribe Marisa to go take care of things, going alongside with her. Chaos ensued is really the only way to describe it. After that, she didn't really get involved in much... but then hail started to fall on her house. This was due to some odd weather patterns that changed the weather based on a persons personality. This ended up with Alice, along with a number of other characters, going above the clouds to Celestia/Heaven/However you wanna call it, and beating up a celestial/angel with a rotten personality that was the center of the incident. And that was Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.
Her last Incident involvement, was during a time during winter, Subterranean Animism, when the ground opened up to the underground. Wandering spirits erupting from there that Alice is concerned will affect her dolls, as they are prime for possession. So, with some additional help, she sent some of her dolls that were now equipped to be walkie-talkies down into the hole with Marisa. Where they proceeded to treat the entire thing like an RPG. This is a shooting game series, by the way. The whole way through, they pretty much did not give a damn. Chaos ensued again, basically.
If it sounds like nothing of great importance went down, then that's really how Touhou goes for the most part. And because Alice never touched the actual important stuff, and isn't really one of the characters with a backstory.
Though, not truly an incident, but there was that one time a little ice fairy showed up at her house, one who is the queen lord of dumb, came to her house while Alice was testing a new magic to make one of her dolls bigger. She let the fairy try to fight it. It ended badly for Alice, as it exploded.
Personality: Alice can be described as a mirror and a foil to Marisa. Where one is wild, the other is tame. Alice operates herself in a cool and collected manner, possibly even aloof. She is not one to socialize much, as even though it's written fact that she houses people who have gotten lost in the forest at night, she doesn't really interact with them much at all. They also tend to flee her house in fear, but that's because they have a problem with a house filled with dolls for some reason. It does paint her as someone who has no problems being helpful, along with offering advice to other characters, even if it's after a fight.
That said, Alice is rather polite, for the most part. With the exception of Marisa and those that get under her skin, she has no problems treating others with a general level of respect and courtesy when she ends up conversing with people. She is also perfectly capable of being friendly, relating and freely talking with others as well, just not likely. With that in mind, although she is sincere about being polite, she can be rather critical of others and is perfectly capable of being a sarcastic jerk. But such things hold little intent on being mean, unless it's Marisa or really anyone she feels deserves such treatment. But really, she's just amazingly awkward.
As both a magician and one who holds an intellectual mind in high regard, Alice likes to learn. Mostly about magic, and dolls, but if it comes to something she may have an interest in, or may one day have a use for, she may wish to explore deeper. Unless it involves extreme danger, then she knows better. Though, the learning mostly comes from books and grimoires, as she is still a collector of such objects... she's just not a thief. Like some certain people are.
Alice lives alone, with her large assortment of dolls. When it comes to them, Alice is a little odd. On one hand, they are her everything. She crafts them solely by hand, she uses them to perform household tasks, she uses them to fight, her dream involves a doll that can live on it's own and she even talks with them. Although the talking is with herself, ultimately, as she controls each and every action of the doll, including speech. To her, they are essentially an extension upon herself. On the other hand she fills them with gunpowder and uses them as bombs. She cherishes the dolls, and yet that's a thing. She has also been noted as making doll copies of others before, with what seemed to be rather frightening accuracy. One thing that isn't entirely odd about her and dolls, is that she takes pride in it. Her skill in what she does is without competition and the ability to control normally inanimate objects as far as she is able to is astounding. The only reason she has to not feel proud about this is the fact she isn't done yet.
Speaking of being proud, let's talk about pride and how it relates to Alice. Alice has an ego, and she will not step down from showing off if she has the chance. It doesn't encompass her, as she does know what she can and cannot do, but when it comes to things she can do there is the chance she will start to talk big of herself. Pride can also be seen in how she fights. While one may think that fighting with a bunch of tiny dolls might not be the most prideful thing around, the fact is that Alice isn't trying her hardest. She COULD try harder but then it would run counter to how she thinks, that being a strategic and cunning mind are more valuable than just brute strength. Which means just blasting a giant laser at someone is out of the bag for her, unlike Marisa. Though, going all out and losing would wreck havoc in how she views herself, so that is another reason to hold back.
Alice also has the oddity of having been involved in a bunch of incidents, not as someone who is mowed down (though she has been at times) but as someone on the normally human only side, trying to solve the problem. Although a good half or so of her ventures were alongside Marisa, one being her as a mission control of sorts, she is proactive enough to take things into her own hands if she they involve her and nobody else is doing a damn thing about it. One would think she fancies herself an exterminator, but it really only has been a handful of times, but that still is a lot for most, or any, youkai.
As you might be able to tell, one Marisa Kirisame is mentioned a lot. That is because the girl is easily the best friend Alice has. She is the only person who can bring out the worst in Alice, the one she can talk the easiest too, shares the most interests with and one of the few she feels comfortable around, as shown one time when she straight up fell asleep next to her. Their friendship is extremely odd, the two are polar opposites in several respects and identical in others, making for a pair that gets along far better than they ever should. Going by this, it might be actually hard to tell that they are close at all, let alone not enemies. But beneath all of the back and forth between them, Alice does care about Marisa in her own way. Just not more than dolls. Also worth mentioning, is Reimu Hakurei. Although Alice isn't on as good of terms with Reimu, she still has known her for just as long as Marisa. She is the second person she could call a friend, and is someone Alice can feel a little casual with.
Now, this brings up the weirdest part about Alice. Surprisingly it does not involve dolls. It's that, although she is a youkai, she acts nothing like one, instead she acts just like a normal human. A normal human with a doll obsession. She has no need to do so, but she continues to eat and sleep like humans do. Her only friends are human. She only really interacts with humans. Even her personality can be seen as more human than youkai. It may help that she is young for one and having been human, she is still not used to how she is now. But the way she acts with certain elements suggest that this is more of a case of clutching onto what humanity she has. Like she is scared of what may come.
So, Alice can come off as a bit of a coward, going by the above. As she doesn't associate with what is now her species, rather keeping together with the supposedly weaker humans, it could be thought that she is scared of other youkai, especially the stronger ones, which she has done her best to not meet with before. Then there's the part about her losing if she ever fought going all out. There's obviously more that could be read into, but it would just lead into various levels of reaching.
Also her dolls are cute, therefore when she talks through her dolls, they sound cute. It makes perfect sense to her.
Abilities:
-Magic. As a being of magic, this comes naturally to her. Some examples of magic include:
--Flight. Not anything exactly special, since anyone of note in Gensokyo flies anyway.
--Bullets/Danmaku/Curtain Fire. Also a staple for everyone, but naturally, magic is the route of this for her.
--Doll Manipulation. The most important one. Alice basically uses magic to hook her conscience up to a doll or possibly more, and controls it's entire being. Through this method, she is able to basically make a doll act like a a normal person. If the normal person was the size of a doll. She tends to put a cutesy spin on the way her dolls act.
-Crafting. A good chunk of the dolls Alice has are of her own creation. To be able to make so many dolls, she must be amazing at handiwork. Not only that, she is said to be the most dexterous person in Gensokyo, and considering what kind of freaks there are? That's quite amazing, when it is just pure skill.
-Spellcards. Basically call outs for pulling off specialized stuff. Special patterns, or just going above the usual.
-A bit more on the dolls. In addition to making them herself, she also stuffs gunpowder into them. So that they can explode. She uses this both as a combat method, and to destroy dolls that are in extreme danger of coming under possession. During normal, peaceful times, she uses her magic to control her dolls to perform household tasks all at the same time. It's a bit of a drain, but it's certainly some form of efficient. Might help more if they were more capable of holding larger things. Also, as mentioned, she CAN increase the size of her dolls, but that is unstable at best and it didn't end well last time.
-She tolerates Marisa enough to team up with her on two separate occasions and live the closest to her. That's an ability right there.
